As Non-GMO Month continues, I’ve got another great product to share with you. I had the opportunity to try one of Emile Noël’s organic artisan oils, and now one of you will too!
In 1974, Emile Noël was the first oil mill in France to use seeds from certified organic farms. Today, they have expanded to the US and produce only organic vegetable, nut and seed oils. In 2011, they added the Non-GMO Project’s Product Verification seal to their products.
Emile Noël makes a wide variety of organic, fair-trade, non-GMO oils including olive oil, sesame oil, sunflower, pumpkin seed, hazelnut, walnut, macadamia nut, and sweet almond oils.
I got to try Emile Noel’s virgin sesame oil.
The first thing I noticed about this oil is that it didn’t smell as potent as the sesame oils I have used before. Well it turns out this is un-toasted sesame oil, which I didn’t realize existed! It has a much, much milder flavor, which I love because it’s so much more versatile. I thought this oil would be great in an Asian-flavored salad dressing. I decided to make some lettuce wraps and whipped up a sesame dressing for them!
- 1 tsp olive oil
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- ½ inch fresh ginger, minced
- 20 oz peeled and deveined large shrimp, tails removed
- 2 tbsp honey
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- Juice of 1 lime
- 1 tbsp sesame oil (untoasted)
- 1 tbsp rice vinegar
- Salt, to taste
- ¾ English cucumber, diced
- 1½ avocados, diced
- 3 green onions, sliced
- 2 small heads butter lettuce
- 1 tbsp toasted sesame seeds
- Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the garlic and ginger and cook until fragrant, about 2 minutes. Add the shrimp and cook until shrimp is cooked through, about 4 minutes.
- In a small bowl, whisk together honey, soy sauce, lime juice, sesame oil and rice vinegar. Season with salt.
- In a large bowl, combine shrimp, cucumber, avocado and green onion. Pour the dressing over top an toss to coat.
- To serve, scoop shrimp mixture into lettuce leaves and top with sesame seeds. (And sriracha if you like a little kick!)
The lettuce wraps came out great and I loved the subtle yet bright sesame flavor from the oil. I also feel great about using a product that’s farmed without chemical fertilizers, synthetic pesticides or GMOs. I will definitely be on the lookout for some of Emile Noel’s other flavors– especially macadamia oil and hazelnut oil, neither of which I have ever had!
