It’s that time of year again. Shamrock Shakes have made their appearance at McDonald’s! I love a good Shamrock Shake. Or, I thought I did. For the last few years, I’ve been longing for a Shamrock Shake. The minty deliciousness I remembered from my childhood. But every year, I somehow manage to miss my window of opportunity. I eat at McDonald’s maybe once every 2 or 3 months, so I usually forget about the Shamrock Shakes until it’s too late.
A couple weeks ago, we happened to be driving 5 hours from Mississippi to Tennessee. There aren’t too many restaurant options in the middle of nowhere, so when lunch time rolled around, McDonald’s it was. I was slightly over exited when I saw the Shamrock Shake sign in the window. I may have jumped up and down a bit in glee.
Well, that glee was pretty short lived. After they handed over my neon green shake, I went to take that first magical sip and… yuck! I’m not sure what the shake tasted like. A combination of food dye and plastic? Definitely not mint. What a disappointment.
Since my craving for a delicious, minty shake was left unsatisfied, I decided I need to make a better version myself!
Homemade Shamrock Shakes
makes 2 small shakes
- 2 cups vanilla ice cream
- 1 cup milk
- 1/4 tsp peppermint extract
- few drops green food coloring
Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into glasses and enjoy!
The shakes were perfectly creamy and minty and 100 times better than the original!
