The past few weeks I have been harvesting roots of all sorts! Fall is all about root veggies and my garden is right on time.
Check out these gorgeous (and huge) French Breakfast radishes!
I know, they look totally weird. Aren’t radishes supposed to be round? Not these ones. These French Breakfast radishes are an heirloom variety which have an elongated red and white root. They are much milder than the round, grocery store variety (which can have a little bite). Their mild flavor is what had the French snacking on these for breakfast. I don’t know if I’m up to eating raw veggies with my breakfast, but I do really love these as a snack dipped in hummus. I have a ton of them ready to be picked, so I’m looking for good radish recipes! I remember my French grandfather snacking on radishes with butter and salt… I may need to try that!
Next up on roots: Carrots!
My wimpy carrots are finally starting to get a little bigger. They love the cool weather. Carrots are supposedly sweeter after a frost, but since we may or may not ever get one, I’ve been harvesting away. These beauties got roasted up with some sweet potatoes.
Speaking of potatoes…
I guess potatoes aren’t technically a root, but they do grow underground like one, so I’m going with it.
A couple of our potato plants are still pretty green and alive, but one had died. When the plant dies, it’s time to harvest the potatoes. And so we did. Garden potatoes (they are also called “new potatoes” because they are so fresh and their skin is paper thin and hasn’t had time to thicken for storage) are better than any potatoes you’ve ever had. They are so sweet and creamy and out of this work. We roasted ours with olive oil, salt, pepper and a bit of garden rosemary.
I feel so accomplished when I make meals made mainly from food we have produced. One morning I made this omelet using garden potatoes, garden beets and beet greens, and quail eggs. The only store-bought ingredients I added were onion and feta! Come spring we will have garden onions, too!
Last but not least, if you didn’t see it earlier in the week, check out this Spinach and Feta Quiche I made. Instead of spinach I used some rainbow chard from the garden!
And don’t forget, if you haven’t already, to enter to win $250 Amazon cash from me and some of my blogger friends! You still have a few days to enter, so get to it!
Have a great weekend!
Looks like you have some beautiful veggies from your garden, Jess! I love those potatoes and carrots. And that omelette looks delicious! Love that you used all of your home grown produce, and quail eggs, too!
What a great harvest! Your carrots are so long and beautiful. We tried growing carrots, but they turned out so stumpy. It was pretty funny.
What a nice harvest you have. I love radishes but have yet to try ones this long. And those carrots are adorable. I bet they would make an amazing carrot soup.
Oh good Lord, please come teach me! I kill every plant I touch! My parents had major huge gardens growing up and I really miss it!
I’m totally jealous. I’ve never had room for a real garden, and this year we had LOTS of room but still nowhere to put it. Next year I’m definitely planning on getting a good start!
Beautiful harvest! I’m so jealous of anyone who can garden. That’s my kind of omelet with all that good stuff added in!
Your garden harvest looks SO pretty, Jess! I’m more than a little jealous of those good ‘lookin red potatoes. Bring on the root veggies! ๐
You’re so lucky to have all of these fresh veggies at your disposal, and I love radishes! The fact that they’re bigger is better! ๐
wow Jess, so jealous as usual. Your garden is amazing! It’s so cool that you get all of that fresh healthy food right out of your back yard! I’m sure it’s very hard, but rewarding work!
I love these posts! Can I come play in the dirt with you and dig up vegetables?! It looks like so much fun! Your dog looks like he enjoys it too ๐
Totally jealous of your green thumb and beautiful harvested veggies!
I love freshly dug potatoes, there is nothing better ๐ I’m jealous that you’re harvesting so many veggies right now, we have had snow for 2 weeks…it’s winter now ๐
