I love having reasons to make fun treats. Halloween parties have definitely been fulfilling that role recently! Candy apples have always been one of my favorite fall treats. Though they’re not necessarily a Halloween food, I thought they fit the bill for this time of year, so I decided to make some for one of my parties. But huge caramel apples aren’t exactly party finger foods. So how about caramel apple slices!
Slicing the apples before dipping them makes them much more party-friendly. Plus, you don’t have to decide on just one type! I made the classics with coconut and crushed peanuts (honey roasted), along with a more grown-up salted caramel version, and a few with Halloween sprinkles just to be festive. The caramel didn’t stick very well to the cut sides of the apple, so next time I’d just dip the skin side!
Caramel Apple Slices
- 5 Granny Smith apples
- lemon or lime juice (optional)
- 1 bag caramel bits (found near the chocolate chips)
- shredded coconut, peanuts, sprinkles, sea salt, etc
Slice the apples. If you want to, you can soak them briefly in a mix of half lemon juice/half water. I did this and they didn’t get brown at all for the 2 days before they were all eaten. I’m not sure if it was the lemon or the type of apple.
Melt the caramels in a small saucepan over medium heat with 2 tbsp water. Line a baking sheet with wax paper, sprayed with nonstick spray. Dip the apples in the caramel and let the excess drip off. Then dip in desired toppings (or sprinkle on if using salt). Place on the baking sheet.
Chill the apples at least 30 minutes before eating. Store the apples in the fridge until ready to eat!
My favorite were the coconut!
