I love fresh herbs, but I rarely buy them unless I have a specific recipe for them, otherwise I usually end up forgetting about them in the back of the fridge until they go bad. It’s sad, because fresh herbs can seriously kick up an otherwise boring dish. I make a lot of salads and egg scrambles which would be awesome with a little fresh basil or chives. Problem is, I never have them around.
Solution? Plant some!
I decided to take on a fun little project… an herb garden! I am definitely not a gardener. I once killed a cactus (RIP Bob), which is pretty hard to do. So I’m not sure how much hope I have for these herbs. But I really hope they grow! I’ll be tracking their progress on the blog every week, and hopefully by the time summer rolls around, they’ll be the stars of some awesome new recipes.
We’ll see.
I’ve planted my 4 favorites: basil, cilantro, rosemary and chives.
Herbs, Week 1:
I started the seeds in little paper cups indoors. Once they sprout, they’ll be transplanted to a planter outside. Each herb has a different germination time. I think the longest one is 15 days. The shortest is 5 days, so perhaps we’ll see some green by week 2!
The directions weren’t very specific, sooo… hopefully I did this right.
Just incase my herbs are a total bust, I also got pre-sprouted (yes, that’s a technical gardening term) jalapeno and basil plants. I have no idea if they need bigger pots than this. I should probably do some research…
Cross your fingers and do a little crop dance for me!
PS– HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!! Herb and veggie plants make wonderful Mother’s Day gifts… much more useful than flowers! How about an herb plant with some corresponding recipes attached? I’m a genius.
Poor Bob!. He’s watching from heaven, and is a little disappointed that basil stole his pot
Cali is so cute…
