Our New House!

April 18, 2013 by jessfuel 9 Comments

So our house still isn’t COMPLETELY put together yet, but I just couldn’t wait any longer to share it with everyone!

As soon as we got to California, we went to see the model for a brand new subdivision being built. Once I saw the inside of the model, I was in love. We both really liked the house, but it was literally the first day we had looked, so we decided to look around a little more. We set up a few house showings the next day.

Well let me tell you. Once you see a brand new, perfect house outfitted with all the bells and whistles, it is REALLY hard to look past other people’s grime, dated kitchens, cracked stucco. When a real estate agent says, “Oh it would be really inexpensive to redo this,” I’m not thinking about the money, but the time spent doing it.

We slept on it, weighed the pros and cons, but in the end we both knew we were in love with the new house.

There are TONS of benefits of buying a new house:

  • Everything works! And will work for a long time. This was a huge selling point for us. Since Nick will eventually be deployed and I’ll be home by myself for months, I won’t have to deal with things breaking. Since I know nothing about houses, and I can’t just call the landlord, this is a huge relief!
  • They are super energy efficient! Our house has state of the art insulation, walls, windows and thermostats, energy efficient appliances and tankless water heater. What does all that mean for us? Lower utility bills! Which is great, since we are used to not paying utilities while living on base.
  • Everything is CLEAN! This was huge for me, as I am a major neat freak. Other people’s grime totally grosses me out. I’ve never once taken a bath in a rented house, nor have I enjoyed laying on the carpet. Having a new house means every speck of dirt in it is your dirt.
  • Trips to Home Depot are fun, not work. Since we bought a new house, I thought we wouldn’t be visiting Home Depot too often. Well I was wrong! But instead of going for repairs and improvements, we get to go for fun projects. Like our awesome built-in garden! Or our new quail coop… (ahem, more on that soon).

So if you couldn’t tell, we’re really happy with our house so far. Come visit us, peeps!

The house looks greats! I really love the kitchen. My first thought was, “That’s a perfect kitchen for you!” I’m sure you’ll be (and already have been) whipping up some delicious recipes in there!

Yay! I feel you on the bathroom thing: I refuse to take a bath until I get new bathtubs. It’s on the list… the long list that you so wisely chose to avoid with a new house ;). So excited for you guys and I hope we get to see it in person sometime in the foreseeable future! <3
