Easy Homemade Salad Dressings (And a Giveaway)

April 23, 2012 by jessfuel 21 Comments

This week is an exciting week because it’s the kick off to the most crazy busy summer of my entire life. It’s a little scary because I’ve been telling myself for the past 6 months that I didn’t have to truly worry about getting wedding planning stuff done until this week hit. And now it’s here. Gulp.

At the end of this week, I’m off to Fort Lauderdale to attend a high school friend’s wedding. I’m very excited, not only to see some friends I haven’t seen forever, but also to see the beach! It’s been far too long. And since beach season has arrived, so has salad season (I’m pretty white, so I’d like to avoid looking like the Michelin man as much as possible).

Luckily, OXO recently sent me some fun containers that make packing a salad for lunch at work super easy!

I normally pack my salads in an ancient plastic container that’s probably leeching chemicals into my veggies daily, and an old recycled garlic jar whose cap is so rusty I sometimes need a wrench to free my dressing.

So my fancy new OXO LockTop containers couldn’t have come at a better time! The little ones seal shut perfectly and don’t leak at all, so they’re great for transporting dressing. Soggy salads are no fun, so transporting dressing in a separate container is definitely necessary.

Salads are a great way to eat healthy, but some store-bought salad dressings can have some scary ingredients. So I thought I’d share some of my super simple homemade dressing combos. Nick has actually told me that he would eat salads every day if they were covered in my dressings, so I must be doing something right!

Homemade Honey Mustard Dressing

  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Olive oil
  • Honey
  • Mustard (Dijon, spicy brown, coarse ground, whichever’s your favorite)

Mix to taste.

Homemade Balsamic Vinaigrette

  • Balsamic vinegar
  • Olive oil
  • Italian herbs seasoning
  • Garlic powder

Mix to taste.

The Mini LockTop containers are great for mixing, storing and transporting your dressing. Just pour in your ingredients and shake, shake, shake!

They’re so easy, so delicious and so cheap (always a selling point for me). I don’t know why you WOULDN’T make your own dressings!

All packed up and ready to go!

I’m kind of in love with these containers. Compared to my mishmash of unmatching old tupperwares, recycled deli meat containers (hey, they work just fine!), and cheapo plastic containers that are supposed to be “disposable,” these beauties are pretty awesome. I already scoped out that there are several varieties available at Bed, Bath and Beyond, so they are definitely going on the registry. Can’t wait to have matching grown up storage containers!

Four more days of salads, then V-A-C-A-TION! I could not be more pumped!

To make this week even more exciting, OXO has given me another set of LockTop containers to give away to one of you! Want to win? Just leave a comment on this post with your favorite way to dress a salad! I’ll pick a random winner on Wednesday morning. Good luck! **THIS CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED**

I like lemon or lime in there. Sometimes I do pesto with oil & vinegar to make it more pour-able.

There’s a specialty store in ann arbor that sells infused oils and vinegars that are sooo good. My favorites to mix together are sicilian lemon white balsamic vinegar and basil evoo. So bright and summery tasting!

I’m pretty sure I put these containers on my registry, but they are one of the items I didn’t get (tear)! I’ve been making my own dressing lately though, with a dressing mixer I did get off my registry–balsamic vinegar, evoo, a little bit of dijon mustard, and some minced garlic. YUM.

I love the raspberry balsamic from Annie’s, and sometimes when I’m feeling fancy I’ll make my own from scratch.

My favorite salad dressing is also a great way to recycle. When you’re almost done with a a jar of dijon mustard just add salt, pepper, crushed garlic, balsamic vinegar, and extra virgin olive oil. Screw close, shake, and voila! Looks like these OXO mini tupperwares would also do the trick.

Jess ….. Here is the best dressing ever …… Send Melinda to the store and pick up a good looking bottle of dressing. Then I would have Andy add some of his favorite alcohol…lots of it. Then I would have Nick add a semi solid mass of his choice. But who will taste test ?
